Casual, Sandwiches, Pizza, etc.
Sticks Shish Kebab, wonderful sauces and sides. Great hummus and pita chips. The second location is now open at the Giant shopping center on our side of town.
Everyday Café at Liberty Gas Station Also in the Giant shopping center, they have pizza, sandwiches, wraps and good gelato.
Riverside Lunch A local burger joint. Not for those expecting to have cholesterol levels drawn anytime soon. Bacon double cheese burger and fries is our usual. The trademark is the thumbprint in the top of the bun from the trip to your table from the grill on a wobbly paper plate.
Mona Lisa Pasta Take-out only. Wonderful fresh pasta and frozen sauces to prepare at home. If you like gnocchi, they have a packaged variety on the shelf (not frozen) that’s the best pre-made I’ve found.
Foods of All Nations Small seating area in this fascinating international grocery store, but mostly take-out. Large variety of sandwiches and prepared entrees and salads. Sushi, too.
Bodos Fresh bagels with all the options. A great Caesar that will keep Jean Claude and the other vampires away for days.
Hot Cakes Decadent desserts, terrific takeout, and smashing sandwiches. (Sorry)
Quiznos In the Giant Shopping Center at Pantops and at Barracks Road. Good selection of gourmet subs.
Christian’s Gourmet pizza buffet on the downtown mall next to the Regal Cinema and the Ice Park.
Chaps Down the mall from Christian’s. Good sandwiches, ice cream and gelato.
Tavern “Where Students, Tourists and Townspeople Meet” Has been around forever. Great southern style breakfast and lunch both served ‘til 3pm. Lose the diet before you darken the door.
Court Square Tavern Huge selection of beers! Pub style food in a pub atmosphere. Smokey, but fun.
Virginian Was on the corner when my mother went to “The University” in the thirties. An institution.
Little John’s Deli Good standard deli fare on The Corner.
O'Neill’s Irish Pub Also on the corner, good sandwiches, Guinness on tap!
Hardware Store Huge menu with sandwiches, soups, quiche, entrees, desserts, etc. On the downtown mall, it really was the Charlottesville Hardware Store. A friend of ours was part of a group of UVA architecture students who redesigned it as a restaurant for a project back in the 70’s.
Bashir’s Close to the Hardware Store. An amazing honey ham and brie sandwich…
Spudnuts The best donuts ever! Made with potatoes to make them extra moist and fluffy. Yummm. Only open through lunchtime.
C'ville Coffee Excellent sandwiches, salads and coffee. "Noodle bowls" at dinner.
Something a Little More Substantial
Guadalajara You’ll find us here after every high school sports event and in between. Authentic Mexican food is plentiful and inexpensive.
Shang Hai They do a great take-out business. Has been voted best Chinese restaurant in town and we agree. Great food, fast service. Conveniently located for us in Pantops Shopping Center.
Monsoon Authentic Thai. Custom heat ranging from not spicy to “might as well lick the sun”.
Biltmore Grill American fare and seafood. On The Corner. Sit outside under the wisteria arbor!
Bizou Homestyle with flair on the downtown mall.
Casella’s In Barrack’s Road. Good pizza and Italian/American food.
Northern Exposure Upscale Italian.
Pasta Bella Tiny strip mall gem with good authentic Italian food. Go early or late to avoid the crowd.
Michael’s Bistro Good food. Unusual beers. We like to try a few with the four beer sampler.
Tiffany’s Less expensive seafood alternative. Small, sometimes smoky. A few doors down from Tokyo Rose.
Star Hill Microbrewery with good food, too. They make my favorite beer, Star Hill Amber Ale
Sakura Good sushi and noodle dishes.
Miyako On the downtown mall, the Japanese chefs yell the traditional greeting when you walk in the door. We have gone with a friend who speaks Japanese and yells the appropriate response. If he’s not with us, we just smile politely and wave…
Tokyo Rose Good sushi bar and full Japanese menu. Music downstairs a couple of nights a week. Open for lunch Tuesday through Friday 11:30 -2:00.
Upscale Dining Experiences (reservations recommended)
Hamilton’s at First & Main Our favorite restaurant! Interesting contemporary American menu, expertly prepared food and great service by a professional and friendly wait staff. www.hamiltonsrestaurant.com
Tastings A wine bar, wine shop and wonderful small restaurant. Flights of wine are a great way to try something new. www.tastingsofcville.com
C&O Variety of well prepared contemporary country French food.
Oxo Modern French cuisine.
Palladio Northern Italian at the Barboursville Vineyards. We saw crates in the front of a wine shop on the Arno in Florence that were labeled “Barboursville Vineyards.” http://www.palladiorestaurant.com/index.php
Keswick Hall Posh English country style. Renovated a number of years ago by Sir Bernard Ashley (Laura’s husband) and now owned by Orient Express. Menu pricy, but very good. Great Sunday brunch.
Duner's A great place on the west side of town, offering French and American cuisine. It is only open for dinner and is consistently busy.
